In the 1970s, a professional skills competition for forestry workers was created that tested five disciplines based on their daily work: tree felling, chain fitting, bucking by combined cuts, precision bucking and limbing.
In this article, we present some basic information about chain fitting.
Fitting another chain: Ready for use without adjustments
To prepare a chain saw which is ready for use, contestants must remove the cutting attachment, turn the bar and replace the chain. Contestants have to fit the cutting attachment so that the chain saw has the right chain tension to carry out the next two disciplines without making any changes to it.
The competition focuses on how well participants can handle a chain saw. They are evaluated on their speed, accuracy and safety in each discipline. A few tenths of a millimetre often mean the difference between victory and defeat.
